Professor Mendes is Professor of Physics at Physics Department, University of Aveiro.
He earned his BA, MA and PhD in physics from University of Porto.
Since 2010 he is Vice Rector for research and doctoral studies at University of Aveiro.
He was Director of Physics Department from 2004 to 2010.
Before joining University of Aveiro he was Assistant Professor at University of Porto (1987-2002). In 2002, he received is habilitation (University of Porto) and was promoted to Associate Professor of Physics at university of Aveiro (2002), and a full professorship in 2005.
He was researcher at several institutions (University of Geneva, University of Oxford, Boston University, UFMG-Universidade Federal Minas Gerais, CUNY, ...).
In 1995-96 Mendes was at Boston University as a postdoctoral research associate.
He his member of the Council of INL - Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory.
He has been awarded by the Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian with the Science Prize, 2004.
Member of the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports, Journal of Complex Networks and ISRN-Combinatorics.
He has held teaching and research positions at University Henri Poincare and UFMG.
He was Diretor of the Associated Laboratory I3N - Institute of Nanostructures, Nanomodelling and Nanofabrication (2009-2010)
He is a member of the Academia Europaea and Sociedade Portuguesa de Fisica
Jose Mendes has published more than 120 articles in scientific journals. He is co-author of two books. His publications has received more than 17000 citations.
