Biographical Note:
Luís António Ferreira Martins Dias Carlos was born in Coimbra, Portugal, in September
1964. He received his PhD degree on physics from
University of Évora in June 1995 with a thesis
entitled: "Optical and Structural Features of Polymer Electrolytes
Incorporating Lanthanide Salts". At 1996 joined the Department of
Physics at the University of Aveiro as Professor Auxiliar.
In 1998 he passes to Professor Associado and in
2004 he completed the “Provas de Agregação” in Physics. Currently, he is Professor Catedrático at the University of Aveiro, Vice-director of
the Centre for Research in Ceramics and Composite Materials – CICECO and
correspondent member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (Physicis).
His current scientific activities include (i) Light
emission of organic-inorganic hybrids, silicates, nanocrystals
and metal organic frameworks; (ii) Self-assembly and emergence of complexity
in organic/inorganic hybrids; (iii) Applications of organic-inorganic hybrids
in solid-state lighting and integrated optics; (iv) Crystal-field, local
coordination and energy transfer in lanthanide-based compounds; and (v)
Luminescent, magnetic and luminescent/magnetic nanoparticles
as new probes for multimodal imaging. Dr. L. D. Carlos is co-author of over 270
scientific papers and has been a regular reviewer of International leader
Journals on Physics, Chemistry and Materials Science, such as Physical Review
B, Journal of Physical Chemistry B, Angewandte Chemie, Chemistry of Materials and Advanced Materials. He
has made part of the Evaluation Panels in Materials Science of the Portuguese
Science Foundation (FCT) and is member of the European Physical Society,
Portuguese Physical Society, Materials Research Society and European Rare
Earth and Actanide Society. He belongs to the editorial
board of The Open Physical Chemistry Journal, The Open Condensed Matter
Physics Journal, Current Physical Chemistry (Bentham Science Publishers) and
